A Legacy of Leadership

By Terry Hamilton, VISTE Board Chairman

VISTE’s 43-year history has been characterized by a commitment to seniors in our area by dedicated staff and volunteers and generous, encouraging donors and funders. For parts of five decades, this formula has helped seniors remain safe and independent in their own homes.

One other secret ingredient? VISTE has been blessed with stable and capable leadership. VISTE’s third president, Steve Bissonnette, announced his intention to retire this year, and our Board of Directors mobilized to find VISTE’s fourth president in five decades. We struck it rich with so many great candidates and ultimately selected Katherine Fitzwater.

Many of you know Steve as a former City Planner and VISTE Board Member, and for the past eleven years as our steadfast leader. Steve thoughtfully gave the organization ample time to find his replacement so our leadership transition could be orderly, and VISTE could assure continued support of senior clients in our service area.

Steve’s time with VISTE has been marked by continued growth in our service to seniors — expansion in VISTE’s resources to preserve its commitment to seniors, and expansion in our physical space. The newly acquired building is already creating opportunities for VISTE to better support seniors. As Steve retires at the end of this summer, we are filled with gratitude for his leadership — he has always shown us The VISTE Way.

Katherine Fitzwater started on August 3 and is working side by side with Steve during the month, taking the leadership baton. Katherine comes to VISTE after seven years with United Way of Central Florida, most recently as Director of Public Relations. A graduate of the University of Florida who has spent her career working and serving in the Lakeland community, Katherine knows Polk County well. Skilled in communication and active in our community, Katherine is getting to know VISTE’s staff, volunteers, clients and supporters, and we look forward to VISTE’s future under her guidance.

As VISTE’s Board Chair, I view this transition with gratitude for Steve and with confidence in Katherine. We are blessed to have our efforts led by these talented people. I know that VISTE’s mission to keep seniors safe and independent in their homes is secure for years to come.

Thank you for sharing that commitment with us!
