President’s Message: The Gift of Perspective

Steve Bissonnette, President

Every Thanksgiving, something special happens when volunteers and our elderly neighbors connect through VISTE. A simple meal and a few kind words bring joy to a senior who might otherwise spend the day alone—and in return, the volunteer walks away with a deeper sense of gratitude and perspective. That exchange of compassion is what makes VISTE’s Annual Thanksgiving Meal Delivery so special.

Fall is here, and the holidays are soon upon us, a time when many of us gather with family and friends around tables filled with food and laughter. Yet we know that not everyone shares this experience. Sometimes people struggle to celebrate because they are alone, their hearts are heavy, and joy seems elusive. Many of our elderly neighbors live in quiet isolation year-round and feel particularly lonely during the holidays.

If you find yourself struggling to find joy this season, I encourage you to reach out in service to others in need. As author Wayne Muller reminds us, “As we serve others we are working on ourselves; every act, every word, every gesture of genuine compassion naturally nourishes our own hearts as well.”

This year marks VISTE’s 29th Annual Thanksgiving Meal Delivery and volunteers are needed to deliver 2,000 prepared meals and live plants to our elderly neighbors in Lakeland, Bartow, Mulberry, and Fort Meade. This family-friendly event underscores the power of “neighbors helping neighbors” by sharing simple acts of kindness with some of our elderly neighbors. In addition to kicking off the holiday season, this event provides an opportunity for all of us to gain a fresh perspective on our own lives and just how much we have to be grateful for every day.

On behalf of the more than 4,900 seniors we currently serve, thank you for your legacy of care, compassion, and support!
